Romantic Things to do in Charlottesville

We get a lot of guests on our tours asking us for ideas on things to do – while they are together on their romantic getaway. They might be on their honeymoon, anniversary, or birthday, and have usually left their hectic working/family life for a Romantic Weekend.

Well, Romance means different things to different people. We are going on the assumption that while you are here during the weekend on your escape, and that pretty much anything fun the two of you do together will be deemed “romantic”. So here goes for this time of year:
#1 Natch would be a tour with us – Arcady Vineyard Wine Tours! We pick you up, and don’t just drive you and drop you off. No, no! We whisk you in, show you where to go to taste, pay any tasting fees, answer any questions you have about our local wines (and if we can’t answer it we know where to go to GET your answer). You don’t have to plan, drive, or read directions. We pamper you so that you can concentrate on each other and having fun! During the afternoon we serve you a generous cheese/fruit/chocolate platter that you can enjoy outside while drinking in the gorgeous views. Ahhhhh..this is the life!! https://www.monticelloappellation.com/

#2 If you are the sporty type and the weather is fine, take the 2.2 mile trek up to Monticello along the Saunders-Monticello Trail. Turning off 64 onto 20 South (towards Scottsville), then left onto 53, you will see a small parking lot on your right. This is the start of the trail. Please note dogs are not allowed beyond a certain point on the trail. It’s a beautiful gentle slope of a walk with custom-built boardwalks taking you over the rougher terrain, ending at Saunder’s Bridge which leads to Monticello.

#3 If you’re staying at a B&B (such as the Wine Country B&B we are now ALMOST ready to open!) then after breakfast on Saturday morning, (before your wine tour!) go visit the Charlottesville City Market which is open until noon. If you are staying in a hotel or motel with meager breakfast offerings, go even earlier since they offer everything you would want for breakfast! You can sip on gourmet coffee and munch on freshly baked goodies as you shop. Here they have everything from healthy locally grown plants, veggies, fruits, (in season) to art, music and hand-made crafts. It’s great fun! And fun for two spells romance to me! Open in April. http://www.charlottesvillecitymarket.com/

#4. Visit the Downtown Walking Mall. It’s a street that is closed to traffic and you can check out the stores and restaurants. Now that it’s almost April the weather is getting nice, and the restauarants put outside tables for outdoor dining. Now that’s romantic! Sitting outside, say, Hamilton’s dining on a killer risotto, watching the crowds walk by. Not warm? Stop in places like the Downtown Grille where you can go all out in the dining room or order dinner perched at a large and lovely bar. They just went smoke-free, which is VERY romantic for me!! http://www.charlottesvilletourism.org/php-bin/resource.php?id=360

#5 For early risers or those who appreciate a beautiful sunset I only have one word for your romantic adventure – or well two – BALLOON RIDE!!! We have several super companies here in Charlottesville, and they take off from either your hotel, B&B, or a designated location if you’re staying in town. What a trip! No way it can be properly explained. For companies go to our website of Things to Do at

#6 If you like wine tasting you like food. Both are romantic! Check our wineries before you come at http://www.virginiawines.org/wineries/r-central.html and see if anyone has any wine tasting dinners or functions going on while you’re here.

Cardinal Point often has music on weekends. King Family has different events from wine dinners, to fun things like Polo during the season (late spring to fall) on Sundays – bring your picnic and tailgate! Veritas has “Starry Night” every second Saturday of the month with music and dancing outside – reserve your dinner or bring a picnic (from now to the fall). Jefferson is doing a special barrel tasting event soon. First Colony always seems to have something going on..chili cookoffs, wine dinners…I’m sure I forgot something so you had better look for yourself!
